Latitudinal variation of diversity in European freshwater animals is not concordant across habitat types

چکیده
Aim We analysed the variation of species richness in the European freshwater fauna across latitude. In particular, we compared latitudinal patterns in species richness and β -diversity among species adapted to different habitat types.

Phylogeography and Genetic Structuring of European Nine-Spined Sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius)—Mitochondrial DNA Evidence
As a consequence of colonisation from different glacial refugia, many northern European taxa are split into distinct western and eastern lineages. However, as for the nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius), the exact location of the contact zone between lineages often remains poorly known. We assessed the genetic differentiation and diversity in the nine-spined stickleback within Europe ...
متن کاملLarge-scale biodiversity patterns in freshwater phytoplankton.
Our planet shows striking gradients in the species richness of plants and animals, from high biodiversity in the tropics to low biodiversity in polar and high-mountain regions. Recently, similar patterns have been described for some groups of microorganisms, but the large-scale biogeographical distribution of freshwater phytoplankton diversity is still largely unknown. We examined the species d...
متن کاملOn the generality of the latitudinal diversity gradient.
The decline of biodiversity with latitude has received great attention, but both the concise pattern and the causes of the gradient are under strong debate. Most studies of the latitudinal gradient comprise only one or few organism types and are often restricted to certain region or habitat types. To test for significant variation in the gradient between organisms, habitats, or regions, a meta-...
متن کاملHabitat Constraints and the Generation of Diversity in Freshwater Macroinvertebrates
Freshwater aquatic invertebrates occupy a range of habitats, which can broadly be classifi ed into running or standing waters. The contrasting habitat permanence over geological timescales of these two habitat types imposes different constraints on their invertebrate populations. Species in more ephemeral lentic water bodies are forced to disperse when the habitat disappears, and are thus predi...
متن کاملHost diversity and latitude drive trematode diversity patterns in the European freshwater fauna
Methods We extracted distributional data for 564 freshwater trematodes across 25 biogeographical regions in Europe from the Limnofauna Europaea and used multiple regression analyses to test for correlations between the diversity of definitive (vertebrates) or first intermediate (gastropods) hosts and that of trematodes, and for latitudinal gradients in trematode diversity. In particular, we inv...
